For self employed professionals and subcontractors, it becomes necessary to create invoices to get paid. Want to earn money with subcontracting? Learn how to keep track, create a paper trail and rely on records. Sometimes, this is the only way to see results from self employment.

As a subcontractor, it’s necessary to keep a record of every job that’s completed. When possible, get monetary agreements in writing and establish more than one set of contact information for employers and clients. Earn money with subcontracting by backing up work with paperwork. It sounds tedious, but sometimes it’s absolutely necessary to create invoices to get paid.

Keep track of all subcontracting work, whether by simply writing it down or listing jobs in a document that’s saved to a home computer (be sure to create backups in all cases). Make note of the date the work started, the day the job was completed and the agreed-upon price for the work. Also include the contact information of the person contracting the work. When possible, obtain payment agreements in writing, through a binding contract. Keep all agreements of payment as well, at least until such time as payment is received.

Once the subcontracting work is completed, create invoices for every job. Some clients and employers may provide their own invoices or request invoices through a payment services such as PayPal. In cases where invoice creation is the responsibility of the subcontractor, however, it’s best to be prepared and to have the correct dates and payment information already on file.

The invoice can be electronic or paper-based, but make sure it looks professional no matter how simple it may be. Include the actual date, the date of the work's completion and the price of the work. It’s not necessary to include a date of payment or place other limitations on employers - remember, a subcontractor works for them and not the other way around. Once the invoice is submitted, it’s likely a date of payment will be agreed upon by both parties or the payment will simply arrive shortly thereafter.

Some employers and clients will not need such reminders or helpful hints, but others may require the paperwork to go with the payment. It’s always a good idea to create a paper trail of invoices and contracts in order to guarantee payment, or to create a record in the event payment is wrongly withheld.
